If you’re in the market for a new home, one of the most important considerations is the presence of pests. You need to go into each home inspection with sharp eyes and be on the lookout for signs of pest damage. If you’re frequenting open homes, then check out these common signs of pest damage from our building and pest inspection experts.
As you walk about the home be on the lookout for active pests such as cockroaches, ants, spiders, mice or flies. Due to the fact pests rarely come out during the day, if you spot one in broad daylight there’s a good chance that there’s a bigger problem.
If there’s an active infestation in a home, you are sure to find a fair few dead bugs hiding about the place. Keep a mental tally as you walk through the home. The more you count, the higher the chances of an infestation.
A sure sign that termites are present is mud packing or mud trails on exposed timber. Termites are very sensitive to sun light and build mud tunnels to protect themselves from the sun light. If you see any “mudding” in and around the house, advise your building and pest inspector about your findings/concern and the inspector will inspect the mudding and advise if the termites are active or not.
Frass – Termite Droppings
A key sign of termites, and in particular drywood termites, is frass – termite droppings. This indicator of an infestation is something that is always looked for during a termite inspection. Unlike subterranean termites, drywood termites don’t use their feces to build their tunnels. Instead they push their poo out of small holes near the entrances to their nest. This results in small black marks and a dark powdery substance in and around the area in which they are infesting.
Sagging ceilings, floors or walls
If you spot this, you might have a serious problem. Something is wrong with the structure of the home and termites might well be the cause. If you spot this knock on the affected surfaces and listen for signs of hollowness or rattling or rustling noises. Also check the surrounding areas for small pellet shaped faeces and shed wings.
